Mermelada de Flor de Jamaica (Hibiscus Flower Marmalade)
Hibiscus Flower Marmalade is a delightful fusion of tangy and sweet, widely cherished in Mexican cuisine. Known for its vibrant color and unique flavor, this marmalade can be used as a spread or an add-in for desserts and beverages. Feel free to customize the sweetness with different sweeteners like honey, agave, or date syrup. It's a perfect balance of floral essence and citrus zest that can be enjoyed in moderation.
Ingredients
🍬 1/3 cup of white sugar
🌺 1.5 cups of dried hibiscus flower
🍊 1 tablespoon of orange peel
💧 4 cups of water
Instructions
1- Combine Ingredients:
- In a large pot, add the dried hibiscus flowers, water, sugar, and orange peel. Stir to combine.
2- Cook Initial Phase:
- Place the pot on a high heat setting and bring the mixture to a boil. Once it reaches a boil, reduce the heat to low.
3- Simmer:
- Cover the pot with a lid and allow it to simmer for 20 minutes. During this time, the hibiscus flowers will soften significantly.
4- Blend:
- If you've got an immersion blender, carefully blend the mixture directly in the pot until smooth. If not, let the mixture cool slightly and blend it in a regular blender before returning it to the pot.
5- Adjust Sweetness:
- Taste the marmalade and adjust the sweetness to your preference by adding more sugar or any alternative sweetener.
6- Thicken the Marmalade:
- Continue cooking the mixture on low heat with the lid on, stirring occasionally, until it reaches a thick, spreadable consistency.
7- Cool and Store:
- Allow the marmalade to cool before transferring it to a glass jar or mason jar. Seal tightly and store it in your pantry.
Prep Time: 10 minutes
Cook Time: 30 minutes
Total Time: 40 minutes
Servings: Makes approximately 2 cups of marmalade.
Equipment: Pot, immersion blender (or regular blender), jar for storage.
Cooking Tips:
- The consistency can vary based on your taste—cook longer for thicker marmalade.
- The orange peel adds a subtle citrus note that balances well with the floral hibiscus taste. Feel free to adjust to your liking.
