Flour Chicharrones
Flour chicharrones, also known as Duros, Duritos, or wagon wheels, are a popular Mexican street snack. Known for their crispy texture, these snacks are traditionally fried but can also be made using modern appliances like the microwave or air fryer. This recipe will show you how to make them in the traditional way, frying them in hot vegetable oil. Once crispy, they are topped with a squeeze of lime, Mexican crema, and a dash of spicy salsa, creating an irresistible treat!
Ingredients
🛢️ Vegetable oil for frying
🧂 1 bag of flour chicharrones (wagon wheels)
🍋 1 lime
🥛 Mexican crema
🌶️ Salsa Valentina (or your preferred salsa)
Instructions
1- Heat the Oil:
- Pour a sufficient amount of vegetable oil into a deep frying pan to allow the chicharrones to float while frying.
- Heat the oil over medium-high heat until it reaches approximately 350°F (175°C).
2- Fry the Chicharrones:
- Carefully add a few flour chicharrones into the hot oil. Avoid overcrowding the pan, as they will expand up to four times their original size.
- Fry the chicharrones until they puff up and turn golden brown, about 30-60 seconds.
- Use a slotted spoon to remove them, and place them on a paper towel-lined bowl to drain excess oil.
3- Add Flavor:
- Once all the chicharrones are fried, place them into a large serving bowl or a big zipper bag.
- Squeeze fresh lime juice over the fried chicharrones for a tangy kick.
- Drizzle Mexican crema generously over them.
- Finish by adding a few dashes of Salsa Valentina, or your salsa of choice. Mix gently to ensure even coating.
