Samosas are a delightful, crispy snack originating from South Asia, but we're adding a twist by infusing bold Mexican flavors. Enjoy this fusion recipe that combines the best of both cuisines for a unique and tasty treat.

Ingredients

For the Filling:
🥩 1 lb of ground beef
🧂 1/2 tsp of salt
🌶️ 1 tsp of chili powder
⚖️ 1/4 tsp of cumin
🌿 1/2 tsp of Mexican oregano
🧄 2 garlic cloves, minced
🧅 1/4 cup of onion, chopped
🌶️ 2 jalapeños, chopped
🌱 2 green onions, thinly sliced
🍅 1 Roma tomato, diced
🌿 3 tbsp of chopped cilantro

For the Dough:
🌾 3 cups of all-purpose flour
🧂 1 tsp of salt
🥄 1 tsp of baking powder
🧈 1/3 cup of shortening
💧 1 cup of warm water

For the Chutney:
🌶️ 2 jalapeños
🌱 1 green onion
🌿 1/2 cup of cilantro
🍋 1 lime
🧂 1 tsp of salt
🫒 1/2 cup of olive oil

For the Egg Wash:
🥚 1 egg
💧 1 tbsp of water

Instructions

1- Prepare the Filling:

  • In a skillet, heat a bit of oil over medium heat. Add the ground beef, salt, chili powder, cumin, and Mexican oregano. Stir and cook for about 2 minutes.
  • Add the minced garlic, chopped onion, jalapeños, green onions, diced tomato, and chopped cilantro. Cover with a lid and let simmer for 5 minutes.
  • Uncover and cook until the liquid evaporates. Set the mixture aside to cool.

2- Make the Dough:

  • In a large bowl, mix the all-purpose flour, salt, and baking powder.
  • Cut in the shortening using a pastry cutter or your fingers until the mixture is crumbly.
  • Gradually add warm water and knead until you form a smooth, slightly sticky dough. Cover and let it rest for 20-30 minutes.

3- Assemble the Samosas:

  • Divide the dough into equal-sized balls. Roll each ball into a flat tortilla shape on a floured surface.
  • Cut each tortilla in half. Brush egg wash along the edges.
  • Add about 2 tablespoons of the cooled filling onto each piece and fold into a triangle. Press the edges tightly to seal.
  • Let the samosas air dry for about 10 minutes.

4- Fry the Samosas:

  • In a deep pan, heat oil over medium heat. Fry the samosas in batches until golden brown and crispy.
  • Remove and drain on a paper towel-lined plate.

5- Prepare the Chutney:

  • In a blender, combine jalapeños, green onion, cilantro, lime juice, salt, and olive oil. Blend until smooth. Serve alongside the samosas.

Prep Time: 30 minutes
Cook Time: 20 minutes
Total Time: 50 minutes
Servings: Makes about 12-15 samosas
Equipment: Skillet, large bowl, blender, deep frying pan

Cooking Tips:

  • Ensure the filling is completely cooled before filling the dough to prevent it from becoming soggy.
  • Seal the edges well to prevent filling from spilling out during frying.
